Signs that you gut is off balance

Your body is finally tuned machine that will always give subtle signs if someting is off balance.  The gut microbiome or balance of micro organisms in the intestinal tract has been publicised in recent years with links to digestive health, mood disorders, weight gain and skin and autoimmune disorders. Thus the explosion of gut healty probiotics now readily available to us on the shelves.

Our bodies give us signs that this balance is off track in a number of ways. Symptoms you may have an imbalance include:

  • Digestive Issues for e.g IBS,bloating, abdominal pain, constipation, diarrohea, acid reflux
  • Recurrant yeast infections e.g thrush or athletes foot
  • Low mood
  • Occasionally Eczema, Psoarisis
  • Allergies and intolerances

Implications of an imbalance:

  • Inflammation: Too many bad bacteria can create inflammation in particular in the stomach. This inflammatory condition then leaves you susceptible to a whole host of inflammatory conditions.
  • Weight gain: A healthy microbiome is essential to weightloss.

How to tackle the imbalance:

  • Probiotics: These are good gut bacteria that will rebalance the enviroment in the gut. They come in supplement form or naturally from fermented foods like kimchi (fermented vegetable), suaerkraut (fermented cabbage), live yogurt, kefir (fermented milk drink) kombucha(fermented tea drink)

  • Prebiotics: These are foods that feed the healthy bacteria in your G.I tract. Examples of prebiotic foods are artichokes, garlic, onions, carrots and leeks
  • Minimizing sugar: Many of the bad gut bacteria thrive on sugar so avoiding sugar is very important to rebalancing the gut
